and I’ll go through fire…. as he wants it so it will be” – Holiday… Billie Holiday.
I survived an open mic night with Hell, and by his own words “did well”. High praise from a poet.
I say survived, because Doug and I are so strongly matched witwise that it’s difficult to establish and maintain a certain order between us. He accused me of trying to sing over him… I told him I couldn’t hear myself. Hehe… Sometimes it’s the equipment.
We are matched in heaven mind you. In my words, we did wonderfully.
This is only my 5th appearance at an open mic. It’s a terribly frightening prospect to contemplate having to jump on a stage (and not have everyone stop and turn around and look at you) and even more frightening is the sight of a lone person on the stage, baring themselves… all alone (and finding the courage to risk lending them a hand). Amen for liquid courage. Bigger amen for cheap liquid courage…
My taps are an annoyance. as much as I love them… I get to wear my instrument all night. So the second those shoes go on, I’m ON. I think I put them to good use on Tuesday, there’s nothing like a rythm to shake up a room….
I was glad I brought the trinkets… especially the rainstick. Doug beat it up some, but it’s in one piece, and was well played. Never thought it was capable of that.
The tambourine… left a huge bruise on my thigh, and earned me a wristband with Punisher on it. Neat. I thought my arm was gonna fall off for Messenger.
Hell’s set was quite nice, not the normal drag on your soul, more of an offering of hope. I’ve seen him live many times (first time I’ve played with him), and this person is certainly the most controlled version of Hell I’ve ever seen. He almost looks proud of himself. I know I am.
I hope more people come out next time, I got good responses to my invitations, so there is interest. We’ll hopefully have something new to play next week, although there was lots of new this week, I don’t see why there wouldn’t be again. I’ll be bringing something new along, and maybe next week I’ll get to sing lead, and Doug can back ME up… he’s a hell of a mountain to move.
He asked me if I could do it straight for half an hour. I believe I was on much longer than that :P
So, I spent the day yesterday doing not much but recover. I enjoyed my recovery, and now that I’ve enjoyed percussing in public… I won’t be so afraid of it anymore.
Hell’s open cuss. Atria Tuesdays…. 10PM

P.S. Just to give you an idea what kinda people you would run into on a Tuesday night other than crazy musicians with underindulged egos chasing each other around an open stage and two mics?
A detachment of our nations finest, in fatigues, celebrating their lives. Oh what a sight to see…. and enjoy. I was the beneficiary of an escort home, a gentleman of the finest calibre. I hope I run into him again, I felt very safe as our regions finest stopped me for interrogation on the way home. I daresay I behaved most ladylike, and perhaps now count a friend among our boys in blue?

Durham’s “finest” in their finest…
