I don’t believe the day I just had.
Then again, I don’t believe most days I have. Neither would you.
I woke up this morning to Coldplay’s Viva la Vida (or death and all his friends)… you know the one, it goes a little something like this:
“I heard Jerusalem’s Bells a ringing, Roman Catholic Choirs are singing” or something like that.
Quite apropos seeing as I fell asleep to “Kingdom of Heaven” last night. “This is your oath… and this is so you remember it”. Indeed…
So, I wake up with this wonderful tune in my head, the sun is out, and for some reason I’m still pissy. Despite secretly having wished for a coffee served to me in bed all week last week, and finally getting one this morning, you’d think I’d be a little happier. I mended that little boo boo just now. Can’t go to bed having bitched out a loved one for being so kind. Wouldn’t want that on my conscience, no Sir.
So the rest of my day starts off, the kids are a little rushed for school, but we get them out the door. I’m just about to get off my duff and get coffee with my sister at 9:30, after completing some preliminary work on my Socan agreement, drumming out a pretty good “Only One”, belted out an Uh oh or two, and catching up on coorespondance, and I get a lovely email from Hell telling me to go fuck myself. Again.
I render myself to coffee at my sisters, and promptly cry my eyes out on her balcony to “In your eyes” by Peter Gabriel. Thank god for music….. “The resolution, of all my fruitless searches”…..
I return home and finally decide I’m not motivated to do shit now, but lo, a friend decides to pick me up instead. Ahhhh….
Spend two lovely hours returning my ego (and a few of my relationships) to some semblance of balance… by the time the kids got home everything was smooth sailing, snacks were made, talks were had, and work was done. Tasks were accomplished. Bravo moi!
And then suppertime arrived, and Emma had been eyeing the shrimp in the freezer for some time (she had wanted it for her birthday dinner on Saturday, but got pizza instead for her sleepover). She bugged me from the moment she got in the door from school for them. So I decided to make them for her tonight.
Around 6 O’clock, after doing her homework without being asked, Emma came to me and said she was bored. I said “go take a bath honey, and I’ll start cooking your shrimp”. And I did.
25 minutes later Emma came running through the living room soaking wet, being chased by her brother. She slipped at the entrance to the office where we keep a bamboo separator (with the express intent to reduce traffic through that area). She was punctured by one of the larger reeds. God love that child.
I’m trying to decompress a little here, thanks for baring with me. I’ll spare you the gorey details of the ensuing scene and wound, and 3 hour, $14 dollar ordeal (thank god for siblings who live next door… or downstairs). Emma is well, and she’ll recover nicely from her wounds, although she has a hell of a scar to show for it. Oddly enough, the last time Emma was admitted to hospital… was for stitches to her head. Silly girl….
Little ones do the craziest things. It’s not like Emma does not know, or hasn’t been told many times, NOT to leave the bathroom wet, or NOT to run in the house period, let alone that particular pass.
You have to wonder then why she did it. Well, obviously she wasn’t thinking.
I remember not thinking myself the time my sister was small in the bath… and she got out to run a little experiment. She had a pair of tweezers, and these looked like the perfect fit for the wall socket facing the bathroom door. I remember THAT jolt like it was yesterday… I’m the one who pulled the tweezers out…lol.
I had the most out of control day I could ever ask for… and I don’t think once I lost my control. I know… because I’m completely in control even right now… I’m shaking on the inside, but I am calm cool waters on the outside. Can’t you hear it in my voice?
I stayed on target, kept on focus, and got shit done. Man am I tired, but I proved something to myself today…
I can sing.
I just caught myself singing Coldplay.. after all that, I’m still singing. Well, last time I tried Coldplay it sounded like shit. Now… it’s pretty fuckin sweet.
“Never an honest word… But that was when I ruled the world….”
That was my day… for what it’s worth to you.
I wonder what tomorrow will be worth?
